Short Breaks in Kent: Why Midweek Is the Time to Go

Details

Kent on a Saturday and Kent on a Tuesday are two different places. At the weekend, Canterbury’s streets fill by mid-morning and the tables everyone wants are gone well in advance. Midweek, the same places slow right down.

If you’re planning a short break in Kent and have a little give in your diary, moving it to midweek makes a real difference. This guide covers where to go, what to check before you book, and how to spend two or three quiet days with Broome Park as your base. Broome Park is a Grade I listed 17th-century estate roughly 13 minutes’ drive from Canterbury.

Why Take Your Short Break in Kent Midweek?

Quieter Canterbury, quieter coast

Kent’s best-known places are at their busiest on Saturdays, Sundays and during school holidays, when day-trippers arrive from London and across the South East. Visit on a Tuesday in term time and Canterbury feels like a city people live in rather than pass through. The same is true of the coast. Whitstable, Deal and Sandwich all take on a different character once the weekend crowd has gone home.

Easier to book the things you came for

At weekends, the first things to go are restaurant tables, spa treatments and tee times. Midweek there is usually more choice of day and time. On a short break, that matters more than it sounds. When you only have two or three days, you want to spend them doing things rather than waiting for them.

Kent at its own pace

Kent is a working county, and midweek is when you see it working. The farm shops are stocked, the harbours are busy with boats rather than visitors, and the orchards and vineyards are being tended rather than toured. The Kent Downs has the highest concentration of vineyards in the UK, and a quiet weekday is a good time to see why.

Where to Go on a Short Break in Kent

Canterbury

Canterbury Cathedral, the medieval streets and the river are the obvious draw, and all are better enjoyed without the Saturday crowds. For a full list of what to see, read our guide to things to do in Canterbury.

Whitstable, Deal and Sandwich

Each of the three coastal towns offers something different. Whitstable is known for its harbour, its oysters and the beach huts along Tankerton slopes. Deal has a long shingle seafront, a pier and a Tudor castle at its southern end. Sandwich is one of the original Cinque Ports, and its medieval streets reward an unhurried walk. Any one of them makes a good half day. With two, you have a full day on the coast.

The Kent Downs

The countryside around Broome Park is chalk downland, woodland and dry valleys. The Kent Downs National Landscape is one of Britain’s most wooded landscapes, and most of that woodland is ancient. The North Downs Way runs between Canterbury and Dover, close to the estate. That makes it easy to walk a stretch in the morning and be back for lunch.

Castles and gardens

Dover Castle sits above the White Cliffs and is one of the largest castles in England. Further up the coast, Walmer Castle is a Tudor fortress that later became a country house, with eight acres of gardens in its grounds and views out to sea. Both belong to English Heritage, so check opening days before you set out, especially outside summer. There’s more on this below.

What to Know Before You Book Midweek

Midweek has plenty going for it, but it’s worth being honest about the trade-off. Some independent pubs and restaurants close on Mondays and Tuesdays, particularly in smaller towns and villages. Many attractions also reduce their opening days out of season. For example, Walmer Castle is open daily from April to October but only at weekends in winter.

None of this should put you off. It just means spending ten minutes checking opening days before you plan each day, rather than finding out at the door. A Wednesday to Friday stay often avoids the Monday and Tuesday closures altogether. For more ideas on planning around the quieter days, see our guide to midweek stays.

How many nights Should a Short Break in Kent Be?

Two or three nights suits most people. Two nights gives you time to explore Canterbury and one other area, whether that’s the coast or a day in the Downs. Three nights lets you do both and still keep a slower day for the estate itself.

Common patterns are Sunday to Tuesday, Monday to Wednesday, and Tuesday to Thursday. Arriving on a Sunday evening means you wake up on Monday just as the weekend visitors have left.

A Midweek Stay at Broome Park Hotel

Broome Park was built in the 1630s, and it had a famous owner three centuries later. In 1911 Lord Kitchener bought the house and spent the next five years remaking its interiors, and much of his work is still in place today. You can read the full story in our piece on Lord Kitchener at Broome Park.

Mansion House Suites or Woodland Lodges

There are two ways to stay. The Mansion House Suites are inside the Grade I listed house itself. Each takes its name from the estate’s history, from the Kitchener Suite to the Oxenden and Dixwell Suites. They suit couples who want to wake up inside the building.

The Woodland Lodges are set among the trees, away from the main house. Each has two bedrooms, sleeps up to six and comes with a fully equipped kitchen, which makes them a good choice for friends travelling together or anyone who likes to cook for themselves some evenings.

The estate midweek: spa, golf and 250 acres

On a short break, it helps to have a base that can fill a day by itself, and with 250 acres of grounds, Broome Park can. There’s a spa and a golf course on site, and midweek you’ll generally find more flexibility on treatment times and tee times than at weekends. For treatments, visit the spa. For golfers planning around a round or two, take a look at our golf breaks.

Dining at The Peacock Restaurant

The Peacock Restaurant is inside the Mansion House. After a day on the coast or the Downs, it means dinner without getting back in the car. Midweek, it’s also easier to get the table and time you want.

Bringing your dog

Dogs are welcome everywhere at Broome Park except The Peacock Restaurant. That makes it an easy short break to bring them on, with 250 acres of grounds on the doorstep and the Kent Downs footpaths beyond.

Midweek has an extra advantage here, as the coast paths and beaches are quieter, which suits dogs that prefer a bit of space. For everything you need to know before you arrive, see our guide to dog-friendly stays in Kent.

Getting to Broome Park

Broome Park is in Barham, between Canterbury and Dover, about 2 miles off the A2 on the A260. The postcode for sat nav is CT4 6QX. From London, take the A2 and M2 towards Canterbury, then continue on the A2 towards Dover. Canterbury city centre is roughly 13 minutes’ drive from the estate, so it’s easy to spend the morning in the city and be back for lunch.

By rail, the high-speed service from London St Pancras to Canterbury West runs hourly and takes about 55 minutes. From Canterbury, it’s a short taxi ride to the estate.

A midweek trip has one more advantage here: off-peak train fares cost less than peak ones, and if your journey falls outside commuter hours, the trains are quieter too.

Short Breaks in Kent: FAQs

What counts as a midweek break?

A midweek break usually means staying on Sunday to Thursday nights, avoiding Friday and Saturday. Hotels define it slightly differently, so check the dates when you book.

Is a midweek short break in Kent cheaper than a weekend?

Midweek nights are generally in lower demand than weekends, so availability is better and prices are often lower. The best way to compare is to check your dates directly on our booking page.

What’s the best time of year for a short break in Kent?

Spring and early autumn offer the best balance. The weather is usually mild, attractions keep their full opening days, and schools are in session for most of those months. Winter is the quietest time of all, but check opening days, as some attractions only open at weekends.

Can I bring my dog on a short break at Broome Park?

Yes, in our dog-friendly lodges as well as the Mansion House rooms. See our dog-friendly stays page for more details.

How far is Broome Park from Canterbury?

Broome Park is roughly 13 minutes’ drive from Canterbury city centre.
